Peru has achieved the greatest reduction of hunger and malnutrition i.e. from 7 million in 1992 to 2.7 million by 2012, said Jazmine Casafranca, Program Assistant at FAO Peru.

She said Latin America is one of the regions that have made the most significant progress in tackling hunger and malnutrition in the world and, Peru without doubt is the country that has seen the biggest reduction in this part of the continent where 47 million people still suffer from hunger.

She noted the situation has improved at the global level, since the number of chronically hungry people has decreased from 1 billion to 800 million due to the fact that the topic has been placed on the public agenda of governments.

“The case of Peru has been significant, as it is one of the countries that have met the Millennium target of reducing malnutrition. The goal was achieved thanks to the support of governments, social society, private sector; we are all involved in the fight against malnutrition,” she added.

The FAO official pointed out that, even though the government strategies and programs are renamed over and over again, the fight against this scourge has been a State policy since 2000.
