Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna on Thursday confirmed Peru's designation as a non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
Said election will become official on Friday, June 2.
"Tomorrow, Friday, we will be chosen for the United Nations Security Council, where I will have the opportunity to submit proposals and learn about coming challenges in this complex stage in international relations," he told local RPP TV and radio station.
In this respect, the government official underlined Peru will have the chance to bring up security-related initiatives.
At the time, the Head of State expressed the Peruvian Government's support for multilateralism as a mechanism to facilitate dialogue and problem-solving among nations.
Peru is running for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council along with Poland, Kuwait, Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea.
The UN Security Council is composed of five permanent members —China, France, Russia, the UK and the U.S.— and 10 non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly for a two-year period.
Countries to be elected tomorrow will join Bolivia, Ethiopia, Italy, Kazakhstan and Sweden in January 2018 to fill the spots Egypt, Japan, Senegal, Ukraine and Uruguay will leave vacant.
