Middle East leading air freight operator Emirates SkyCargo delivered its first cargo to Peru, thus showing its interest in adding the Inca nation to its route network, the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry informed Wednesday.

Emirates SkyCargo is the air cargo division of giant The Emirates Group, a world-class organization with manifold business interests in the aviation, travel, tourism and leisure industries.

The decision owes to the sustained growth of Peruvian shipments to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Volumes of said exports hit a historical record in 2016, thereby exceeding US$430 million, Peru's National Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) data revealed.

Third trade partner

Such results place Peru as EAU's third-largest trade partner in Latin America, outperforming neighbors Chile and Colombia.

In this line, non-traditional exports saw a 14% rise in 2016 over the previous year.

Emirates landing thus marks the first big step towards greater air connectivity between Peru and EAU, the Foreign Trade Ministry said.

To this end, Peru's Trade Office in Dubai (Ocex Dubai) will carry on with proceedings to welcome more cargo flights of the renowned operator.
