DP World Callao announced it has completed a US$144 million disbursement aimed at improving maritime and land access to the Port of Callao in compliance with the Southern Dock terminal concession contract.

The funds, also known as Additional Supplementary Investment (ICA) according to the contract, were submitted by the Emirati operator to a trust administered by the National Port Authority (APN).

Investments

With this investment, in addition to the US$350 million spent by the Emirati company in the construction and equipment of the southern dock, the said maritime terminal has become one of the largest port infrastructure investments in Peru.

ICA has enabled Peruvian authorities to carry our large scale works, which have impacted on the country’s port activity, said Gerard van den Heuvel, General Manager at DP World Callao.

Among the works stand out: the extension and dredging of the entrance channel to the Port of Callao, and the improvement of Nestor Gambetta Ave, an important artery linking the port to the rest of the country.

Port Enlargement

According to Van den Heuvel, the port width size has increased from 180 to 210 meters, while its depth was increased to about 16 meters (from 10 meters) with the harbor opening expansion and entrance channel dredging.

The port is now able to receive deep-sea vessels such as the Super Post Panamax type ones, which account for about 15% of ships reaching the southern dock.

This, in turn, is reflected in a 70% increase of the cargo moved by the port between 2009 and 2013.

Traffic Improvement

As for the improvement of Gambetta and Manco Capac avenues, DP World General Manager stressed that significant progress has been made to improve traffic conditions to the Port of Callao.
