Peru’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Jose Gallardo, and representatives from Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac) opened the first stage of the upgrading and refurbishment project undertaken at Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport in Cusco.
Refurbishment works carried out at the domestic departure lounge include a 50% increase in capacity.
A Unified Rate for Airport Use (acronym in Spanish: TUUA) has been implemented.
Preliminary works have begun on the airport’s parking lot and terminal. This will help increase the flow of vehicles leaving and picking up passengers.
A brief tour also showed access ramps and the check-in area, which will enable to assist passengers of up to 37 domestic flights (74 operations, including takeoffs and landings).
This first stage entailed an investment of S/.680,000 (about US$217,460), which is part of a S/.5 million (about US$1.5 million) financing package that will also fund the second and third phases –to be focused on infrastructure refurbishment.
According to Minister Gallardo, works will provide more efficient assistance to national and international passengers visiting Cusco.
The project seeks to upgrade Cusco’s airport facilities to ensure it can keep with the increasing tourist demand until Inca de Chinchero Airport is completed in five years.
Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport serves more than 30 flights and welcomes about 6,666 passengers per day, that is, more than 2,400,000 people annually.
