12:43 | Lima, Dec. 07 (ANDINA).
The upcoming construction of four access roads and a cable car will allow to triple the number of tourists who visit the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, Cusco's Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has announced.
The entity's head, Jose Altamirano, predicted that more than 4 million tourists from overseas and within Peru will be arriving in Machu Picchu annually, about three times the current number recorded so far this year.
"For this to happen the planned access routs should be executed," the tourist official told Andina news agency.
Likewise, he ruled out the possibility this kind of infrastructure will affect the defined geographical area in which the famed 15th century Inca site is located.
"Other archaeological complexes around the world, such as in Egypt and Mexico, have seen a four-fold increase in visitors precisely because authorities have allocated funds for access road infrastructure," Altamirano said.
The Peruvian government is set to kick off the construction of the country's first cable car line in the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu next year.
