In 1992, more than 190 countries adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Since its creation the convention has sought to stabilize the emissions of greenhouse gas, in order to protect the planet.
Environment-related decisions, to be later implemented by member nations, are made at the convention through the COP (Conference of the Parties). COP meetings are held once a year.
Next Monday the UN Climate Change Conference 2014 will kick off in Lima, Peru.
On this edition, COP 20 aims at creating a draft to set the commitments regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The draft is intended to be finally approved and signed by Convention members during the next COP 21 to be held Paris in 2015.
More than 12,000 attendees –including party countries, entrepreneurs, observers (directives of NGO’s), and journalists- from 195 countries are expected to attend the summit.
The Presidents of the Pacific Alliance, composed of: Mexico, Colombia, Chile and hosting nation Peru will be present.
Other relevant personalities will represent institutions such as the: World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank and, of course, the United Nations. Just to name a few.
The meeting will come to an end on December 12 2014.
