Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said the construction of the bi-oceanic railway between Peru and Brazil, with the support of his country, will respect both the environment and culture of native people of the rainforest.

To China, he said, the Amazon jungle –shared by Peru and Brazil– is a “world treasure” and the three countries’ priority concerning the project’s feasibility studies is to protect the environment.

“The three parties agree that a joint feasibility study will not only favor our development, but will also ease the environment’s protection,” he told the media at the government palace in Lima.

During the ceremony, Li signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Peru and China aimed at conducting feasibility studies of the railway, whose investment is estimated to reach US$ 10 billion.

"China respects Latin America’s biodiversity; besides, the development of its civilization is not only the result of human development, but the beginning of the Amazon jungle, which is home of a great diversity and treasure of the world," Li affirmed.

“It is necessary to protect the ecological environment and biodiversity while undertaking infrastructure projects. Our work should favor the improvement of locals’ quality of life by respecting their customs and life styles,” he added.
