Lima's distinctive district of Miraflores has a group of municipal guards who have provided bilingual assistance to more than 10,000 tourists since their entry into the patrol unit in April last year.

Members of the "Bilingual Team" were carefully picked based on their ability to deal with queries and provide guidance to foreign visitors or individuals staying in the tourist area.

The languages they speak include English, Italian, Portuguese and Chinese. French speakers will join the group soon.

The team is made of 20 guards, 12 men and 8 women. Four of them attend telephone queries at the Central Alerta Miraflores, a central control room; while the remaining 16 bilingual members patrol the most popular and visited places in the district.

Assistance is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They also provide car patrol service and are baked up by a tourism police officer.
