Over 5,000 people comprised in 120 troupes will march through the streets of Ayacucho (Southern Peru) during the celebration of the traditional carnival, which will be held from 14 - 18 February this year.

According to Teófilo Quicaño Malco, assistant manager of Ayacucho's Tourism and Craftwork, this number can increase, considering  there are many groups, which have not confirmed their participation yet.

"The goal is that all troupes march through the historic center. It means, this is going across the Main Squares of Sucre and Huamanga. Every troupe is composed of at least 32 people," declared Quicaño to Andina news agency.

However, there are troupes "exceeding 200 people," he explained. Those have the special feature of displaying colorful costumes, dancing and music.

Each costume can cost between S/. 40 – S/.90 (about US$13 – US$30).

"Ayacucho’s carnival is much better than that of Cajamarca’s. It is multicolored, very expressive. It is a homage to life and cultivation. It is really beautiful," he expressed.

The Carnival is framed by other activities, which began last January 18 with the rural carnival.

Huamanga Municipality and the National Police have engaged in coordinations, so visitors can enjoy the Carnival safety, added Quicaño.
