The renowned chef Monica Huerta brought the flavor of her picanteria –a traditional restaurant serving typical dishes from Arequipa, Peru– to Italy within the framework of a gastronomic and cultural program that closed Peru's Independence Day celebrations in Milan.

Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Magali Silva said the activity took place as part of the festival “Peru Feeds your Soul” taking place in Expo in Città in Milan.

Peru Feeds your Soul is an initiative launched by PromPeru and the Peruvian Trade Office in Milan aimed at promoting our gastronomy and products in this city. The program will run until September and includes several activities such as an especial Peruvian menu at ‘Daniel’ or a Cebiche & Pisco bar at ‘Timè’.

The exclusive restaurant ‘Daniel’ presented a special menu that alternated between Italian cooking and Arequipa’s signature dishes such as solterito, ocopa, chupe de quinua, lechon macerado en chicha con chuño and queso helado.

“These delicacies were made following traditional recipes, and served in smaller portions to enhance the tasting experience among diners, who enjoyed the exceptional display of clay pots and a ‘batán’ (a sort of stone pestle and mortar), which were especially brought for the dinner,” she added.

In the end, attendees toasted with Pisco distilled from a special variety of quebranta grapes. The toast was made by pisco maker Jose Moquillaza on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations.

The event saw the participation of journalists from important local media such as La Stampa, Il Sole 24 Ore, Icon Panorama, among others, who showed their enthusiasm as they discovered the taste of Arequipa’s food.
