U.S. Ambassador to Peru Brian A. Nichols announced a new contribution to the Andean nation that adds to the United States’ first donation of US$525,000, disclosed on March 23, totaling US$1.5 million of disaster emergency aid.

Ambassador Nichols stated: "We have expanded our collaboration to the Government and people of Peru in the face of this unprecedented disaster."

The new contribution includes:

• US$100,000 to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) for water, sanitation, and hygiene in La Libertad and Lambayeque regions.

• An additional US$100,000 to CARE Peru to help restore healthcare services, drinking water supply, basic sanitation, epidemic control, and to provide support in coordination and management issues.

• An additional US$65,000 to buy portable solar generators and water pumps.

"Our contribution also consists of 10 helicopters, currently used by Peru's National Police. They have flown more than 250 hours carrying over 70 (English) tons of humanitarian assistance," he said.

The diplomat explained that operating 10 helicopters and an aircraft to assist in the emergency response has cost US$775,000 so far.
