The emblematic Afro-Peruvian ensemble Peru Negro, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, has prepared a special two-day-only performance at the Lima Municipal Theater on Friday and Saturday, Oct 16-17.

Founded in 1969 by Ronaldo Campos de la Colina, Peru Negro is aimed at preserving traditional dances from the African community in the country.

Several decades later, his son Rony prepares a special performance to mark the group’s 45th anniversary.

The venue chosen to present the two-hour show could not be more symbolic: the traditional Lima Municipal Theater.

Rony Campos told El Peruano official gazette that Peru Negro has always been a family initiative. For instance, the group comprises most of his cousins, uncles, siblings and more. “I am everybody’s uncle,” he jokes.

This weekend performance will cover almost five decades of their trajectory. However, new songs will be included as a novelty.

“One of them is called ‘Su Majestad, el Cajón’ (His Highness the Cajon) and the other is dedicated to my father Ronaldo,” he stated.
