Several activities, such as relevant leaders being decorated and a festival organized by Lima Metropolitan Area Municipality are to be held today; on the Afro-Peruvian Culture Day.

Three important Afro-Peruvian leaders will be publicly recognized and granted the Culture Merit award by Peru’s Culture Minister Diana Alvarez-Calderon.

Personalities are: Researcher and specialist in Afro-Peruvian literature Milagros Carazas, musician Santiago "Coco" Linares and photographer Martin Alvarado.

Likewise, a homage will be paid to the poet, researcher and high-level representative of the Afro-Peruvian cultural movement Nicomedes Santa Cruz. This year, Peru celebrates Santa Cruz’s 90th birth anniversary.
Thus, a concert will be performed by AfroPeru, group founded by the popular musician Rafael Santa Cruz, who passed away in 2014.

The event will start at 6.45 P.M at the Mario Vargas Llosa Theater located in the Biblioteca Nacional del Peru (National Library) facilities.

Afro-Peruvian Festival

Organized by the Lima Metropolitan Area Municipality and the Congress Afro-Peruvian Roundtable, the festival is scheduled to start at the Plaza Mayor (Lima city’s Main Square) at 6.30 P.M. since it is the perfect moment to celebrate the International Decade for People of African Descent.

The event will include a homage to the “ten-line stanzas” of poetry, which made Nicomedes Santa Cruz famous, and a fashion show featuring Afro-Peruvian models.

The group Esencia Negra will also perform a theatrical piece, music and dances, whereas Grupo Jiza will play Peruvian wooden percussion instruments such as: Cajón and cajita (little box) for attendees to enjoy.

Finally, the famous group Cosa Nuestra will appear on stage. The collective has been recognized in the last edition of Viña del Mar Festival. They mix Peruvian traditional music with the Afro-Latin, Caribbean and American Salsa hits.

Conferences and workshops will also be part of this great celebration. The festival offers free admission to the public.
