08:52 Pronama: Lima, Callao to eradicate illiteracy by July 2010

Lima, Apr. 12 (ANDINA). Lima and Callao will be declared illiteracy-free regions by July this year, thanks to the literacy facilitators' continued efforts in teaching people to read and write, said the head of Peru's National Program of Mobilization for Literacy (Pronama) Angel Velasquez.

Velasquez said Pronama's goal is that 96% of adults and elders know how to read and write, thus achieving the goal set by UNESCO to declare an area an illiteracy-free territory.

“Where there is an illiterate person, there is also someone who can teach him/her to read and write; and Pronama provides all necessary materials and books for this purpose,” he told Andina.

Angel Velasquez pointed out that this year's goal is to assist 750,000 people, living in some 400 districts across the country, to become literate. "Pronama also aims to involve 600,000 people in post-literacy programs, so that they do not forget what they've learned," he added.
