President Humala announced that Health Minister Alberto Tejada, Housing Minister Rene Cornejo and Civil Defense officials will personally monitor relief activities in the area.

Dozens of families in the northeastern region of Loreto have been affected by heavy rains and flooding, prompting the central government to declare a 60-day state of emergency in several provinces and towns.

The Peruvian leader said the government will continue to tackle the situation along with regional and municipal authorities.

"We must work together, I won't leave you alone, we will work hand in hand," he added.

Humala, who flew over the affected area by helicopter, distributed food, clothing and medicine and provided 200 portable chemical toilets to the local population.

The most severely flood-affected areas include the districts of Punchana, San Juan Bautista, Belen and Mazan in the province of Maynas, as well as Andoas in Datem del Marañón.
