During the 19th Peru Travel Market (PTM 2012), Canales noted that in order to achieve this goal, which means to double the current figure, Lima should be considered as a convention center and a leader in the region that works together with the private and public sector.
"We are telling buyers that Lima is not a bedroom community or a stopover. We are showing our capital city as a tourist destination, maybe the cuisine capital of America and at same time we will try to turn it into the convention capital", he said.
Canales added that now Lima attracts more tourists than Cusco as over 1.7 million foreign tourists have arrived by air and roughly 700 000 people by land.
The PTM 2012 brings together 123 tourism promoters of 105 companies from 24 countries and 104 suppliers, including hotels, travel agencies and tour operators.
