Lima, Nov. 23 (ANDINA).
The leaders of the 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) wore a traditional Peruvian poncho made of "baby alpaca" for the official photo of the international event, which ended today with the presentation of the Declaration of Lima.

The 21 garments, which arrived at the Peruvian capital a week ago, were made by the company Inka Alpaca Kuna, in Arequipa, under the traditional loom system.

Before its delivery, these garments were steamed to guarantee its smoothness.

The head of the APEC Summit's protocol, Gladis Otero, said to Andina news agency that the "Andean poncho" selection to dress APEC leaders for the official photo was a proposal of the Peruvian president Alan García.

In addition, she indicated that there were different choices for making these garments. For example, -she said- these could have been made of linen and alpaca  in different colors.

"However, the president (Alan) García chose the poncho to be light brown color with stripes on the edges" she added.
