The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and the International Red Cross will assist people located in Peru’s northern border regions that might be affected by El Nino weather event.

Agreements will be signed with the two international organizations in the next few days, said the Executive Director of the Peruvian Chapter of the Binational Development Plan for the Peru-Ecuador Border Region, Harold Forsyth.

“Both of them are intended to assist Tumbes region, which is being affected by El Nino phenomenon. The two agreements can make a difference and are our initiatives,” Forsyth was quoted as saying by Andina news agency.

He explained the funds to implement such initiatives will come from the international cooperation.

“A very important contribution is received by many countries, many international organizations and NGOs. The central government also provides an annual contribution,” he stated.

The Ecuadorian Chapter receives a similar backing, by following the same procedure to help implement different projects in the border zone.

According to Forsyth, the contributions of both governments are limited, but what matters is the international cooperation received when a project arises.

Both the WFP and the International Red Cross will implement food and emergency management assistance programs as El Nino develops.
