A total of 58 volunteers from the US Peace Corps will collaborate with community development projects located in eight regions across Peru, reported the US Embassy in Lima, Peru.

According to a press release, they will provide assistance to vulnerable populations in rural and peri-urban areas in Ancash, Amazonas, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Junin, La Libertad, Lambayeque and Piura.

The new volunteers will also be sworn-in on Friday, November 28. The ceremony will be held at the residence of the United States Ambassador to Peru, Brian A. Nichols, in his presence.

The event will gather families that hosted volunteers during their 11-week pre-service training, as well as representatives of agencies with which volunteers will be placed for their period of service.

According to the US embassy, 58 Peace Corps volunteers out of the 226 currently serving in Peru will live and work for two years in the aforementioned regions to join community development programs.

They must promote social inclusion through programs related to community health, environment, water, sanitation and hygiene.

During their service in Peru, volunteers learn to speak local languages, including Spanish and Quechua. More than 3,365 Peace Corps volunteers have served in Peru since the program was established in 1962.
