U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will embark on a Latin American tour in January next year, including a stop in Peru, Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna informed on Tuesday.

Remarks were made as he left the Department of State in Washington D.C., following a meeting with Tillerson, with whom he discussed issues in the Latin American agenda.

"He is slated to reach Latin America in January but does not know which countries yet. Without a doubt, he is interested in reinforcing the mutual understanding between our countries […] Naturally, I have invited the Secretary of State to visit Peru [as part of such tour] and he has accepted," the minister said.

Tillerson's trip, which has not been officially announced by the U.S. Department of State, would be his first Latin American tour and would occur a year after he became the U.S. Government's leading diplomat.

Luna did not mention any other countries but confirmed Tillerson's intention to visit the Andean nation.

The Peruvian diplomat also attended a roundtable held by the Peruvian Embassy in the United States along with the Inter-American Dialogue.

The event featured civil society, private sector and academia representatives with links to the region.

Moreover, Luna presided over a meeting on the upcoming 7th Summit of the Americas, scheduled for April 13-14 in Lima.
