The United States has congratulated Peru's government for last week's arrest of at least 24 leaders and members of the Movement for Amnesty and Fundamental Rights (Movadef) for alleged terrorist ties to the Shining Path.
In a statement published in its webpage, the U.S government hailed this successful effort, under the leadership of the Peruvian President Ollanta Humala as it exemplifies an admirable commitment to respect for the rule of law and human rights.

Moreover, the U.S highlighted the patient and persistent criminal investigation work, and the effective government's approach by featuring coordination among judicial, police, armed forces and intelligence elements.

The Shining Path has been designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization since 1997. Since 1980, the group is responsible for the deaths of many tens of thousands of Peru's civilians as well as attacks on U.S. Government personnel and facilities.

Last Thrusday, the Andean nation's police arrested twenty-eight members of Movadef, the organisation's political arm of the Shining Path, on allegations they supported terrorist groups, including with funds from drug trafficking.

Those arrested include Manuel Fajardo, the group's secretary general, and Alfredo Crespo, the deputy secretary general and attorney for jailed Shining Path leader Abimael Guzman.
