The United States Ambassador to Peru Brian A. Nichols highlighted the care of water and environment provided by formal mining in Cajamarca, which guarantees the development of local communities.

During his visit to Chailhuagon reservoir, built by mining corporation Yanacocha, Nichols indicated this is an “important work” towards development.

The reservoir was built in the framework of the Conga project.

"The residents can increase their crops, agriculture and livestock activities, as well raising trout. What people have here is of high quality," stated the Ambassador.

Accompanied by the Yanacocha’s Leadership Team, Nichols toured the reservoir, which has increased the Chailhuagon Lake's capacity from 1.2 to 2.6 million cubic meters.

This assures the appropriate development of farming activities in the area.

Ambassador Nichols shared with locals of San Nicolas community, where the reservoir is located.

The residents told him about the importance of “having a reservoir” in the area, and how they have been jointly working with the company, in order to continue developing.

Moreover, Javier Velarde, Yanacocha’s General Manager indicated this visit was very positive.

"The contact established with the locals is very important, so he [Ambassador Nichols] can listen directly [from them] how their relationship with the enterprise is, and the hopes they have for continuing to work together," Velarde stated.
