Li Yong, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), said Peru has great potential in terms of regional leadership and development with the expansion of inclusive and sustainable industrial activities.

“Peru has enormous potential, in terms of resources, to develop its private sector, and besides, has strong leadership open to the market and community, and has great potential to deliver a higher level of economic incomes,” he underlined.

Following consultations and studies with the government, private sector and development institutions, Li found out there are several areas for joint work.

The first one is quality and innovation; the second area has to do with value chains and business development, both at the domestic and international levels and; the third area refers to development of sustainable industrial parks.

“We want the proposal we are presenting in Peru [that of sustainable industrial parks] to become a model for the entire international community,” he underlined.

There is another area, efficiency in energy resources, mainly in clean renewable energy, which is an important issue to every country.

Li has met with Ministers Bruno Giuffra (Production), Alfredo Thorne (Economy and Finance), Ricardo Luna (Foreign Affairs), and he is due to hold audiences with heads of Environment and Mincetur portfolios.

“We tried to include the private sector and financial bodies at the global level, such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, our partners in industrial development,” he told RPP ration and TV station.

Greater sustainable awareness

Peru was the first country in the region to join the Programme for Country Partnership (PCP) in December 2015.

Inclusive and sustainable industrial development has become a key issue since the Lima Declaration was signed in 2013.

He thinks UNIDO state members are familiar with this concept, which is particularly important for women and youth’s participation, since they can have the chance to become entrepreneurs and share prosperity with more people.
