The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has praised Peru's efforts in protecting its historical and cultural relics from illegal trafficking.

"We see that there is a very important effort on the governmental level, in civil society, and local governments. We feel that a very interesting sense and a conscience about the value of culture in Peru," said Magaly Robalino Campos, Unesco’s representative in Peru.

Likewise, the Spanish ambassador in Peru, Juan Carlos Sanchez Alonso, told Andina that the work the two countries are performing requires cooperation between different areas of society.

"The most important thing is that people understand that patrimony belongs to all Peruvians, and it’s up to them to defend it, to be active, to be alert, and to not participate in any of these activities as well as to report any way they can," said the ambassador.

According to the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, over the past seven years Peru has repatriated more than 8,000 cultural artifacts that were illegally smuggled abroad.
