Electoral observers from the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) will be present during Peru’s October 5 regional and municipal elections, said Peru's National Jury of Elections (JNE) on Sunday.

This announcement was made following a written communication by the regional bloc’s President Pro Tempore and head of the Independent Electoral Council of Surinam, Jennifer van Dijk-Silos, to JNE.

The Inter American Union of Electoral Organisms (Uniore), in turn, started the process of applying to be accredited as an observer,

On the other hand, the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation and Korea’s National Election Comission have confirmed their attendance within the framework of cooperation agreements signed with JNE.

It should be noted that the European Union delegation and embassies of Ecuador and Guyana in Peru have already appointed their delegations’ officials that will report on the progress of the elections.

The Organization of American States (OAS) has also dispatched a mission of 35 international experts to Peru to monitor the electoral process scheduled for October 5th, 2014.

Leading the electoral observation mission will be the renowned Uruguayan politician and lawyer, Sergio Abreu, who was appointed by the Secretary General of the hemispheric organization.

UNASUR was created in 2008 as an international organization to support regional integration in energy, education, health, environment, infrastructure, security and democracy.

In addition to Peru, the current 12 member states are: Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, Suriname, Guyana, Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia and Chile.
