The British Embassy in Lima welcomed Peru as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
"We will work together to prevent disputes, maintain peace, and combat threats," the diplomatic mission posted on Twitter.
Peru officially
began its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security on January 1, after the
2017 election in which it won 186 votes out of the 193 UN member states.
Led by Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, the Peruvian delegation is replacing Uruguay's after a two-year tenure.
The Andean nation has served four terms at the UN Security Council. Its first term was in 1955-1956 and the last one in 2006-2007.
The UN Security Council's
functions and powers include maintaining international peace and security, investigating any dispute or situation which might lead to international friction, and recommending methods of adjusting such disputes or the terms of
settlement.
