The European Union (EU) deemed as "very positive" policies developed by the Peruvian Government against crime and drug-trafficking.

It also highlighted the level of participation of State-run institutions on the matter.

"The EU relies on interlocutors in the government, who are highly committed to security in general. This sphere entails the fight against drug-trafficking, as well as other types of felonies," EU Ambassador to Peru Irene Horejs expressed.

"President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and his administration prioritize the fight against organized crime in general," she said in this sense.

Last October, the Executive Power issued Legislative Decree No 1244 that sets out stronger penalties for leaders of criminal organizations and those providing them with weapons; among other measures.

Horejs also indicated the EU holds "fluent dialogue with the Interior Ministry" and other State-run institutions involved in the fight against illegal drugs.

In this sense, she mentioned EU's existing cooperation with the National Commission for Development and Life Without Drugs (Devida) through its Executive-President Carmen Masias.

"We are pretty-much based on the experience gained during the previous administration," she stressed regarding the official, who this year returned to lead the said organization.

By the end of November, EU, Devida and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) signed an agreement to implement an airport-communications project at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport.

The tool will serve to strengthen actions against drug-trafficking at Peru's first terminal.
