The Ferrocarril Transandino company announced Tuesday it has resumed service on its Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu route, following a temporary suspension of service due to flooding in the area.

In a statement the railway firm said it would reopen the route, and said weather conditions were adequate for the safe passage of trains.

On Monday train service was suspended after water levels at the Urubamba River reached 675 cubic meters per second.

At the time Ferrocarril Transandino said there were no damages to the railways, and said the suspension was being carried out for preventive purposes.

According to local radio RPP, Ollantaytambo was placed under a state of emergency after torrential rains flooded the area over the weekend.

The decision to resume service was made after reports that water levels at the Vilcanota River had decreased, Peruthisweek.com reported, citing Andina.
