Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros said the United Kingdom has expressed strong interest in boosting and enhancing trade ties with Peru. Announcement was made after a meeting with British counterpart Lord Price.

In his official visit to Peru, the Minister at the UK Department for International Trade held an audience with Minister Ferreyros to address the importance of reinforcing trade ties between Peru and the bloc once it has completely withdrawn from the European Union.

“At present, trade with the UK is facilitated through an agreement with the European Union. It is essential for us to move on and strengthen ties; besides, the possibility of a bilateral trade deal is meaningful,” Ferreyros was quoted as saying.

In this sense, the Peruvian official said trade with the United Kingdom has proved important over the past years.

“Peru-UK trade totaled US$783 million in January-November 2016. Likewise, Peruvian exports during this period reached a high of US$545 million,” he underlined.

Market Development Plan

According to the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry’s (Mincetur) head, his office has been working on the preparation of a Market Development Plan with the United Kingdom. The document provides profiles of products and services with market potential.

There are a range of opportunities for different Peruvian services and products like grapes, blueberries, pomegranates, quinoa, maca powder, wood flooring, fine and costume jewelry, dressmaking, gastronomic franchises, among others.

As is known, Minister Ferreyros visited London in October last year for Europe Road Show 2016, organized by inPeru. On that occasion, he met with British authorities, business sector representatives and investors. Thus, Lord Price's visit to Peru was intended to resume talks aimed at deepening the bilateral relations.

It should be noted the United Kingdom is comprised of England, Wales, Scotland (which make up Great Britain) and Northern Ireland.
