Tourism sector in Peru's Amazon to post 10% growth by 2014

The Amazon regions of Loreto and Ucayali, in northeastern Peru, will see increase their tourist and commercial activities by 10 percent in 2014, mainly due to the entry of enterprises specializing in boosting ecological tourism, it was reported Monday.
The head of Loreto Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Victor Valdivia, noted the tourist sector grew by 9 percent in 2012 and it is expected to show and increase of 10 percent in 2014.

Likewise, the official stated that two companies specializing in river transportation will start operations in Loreto the next year.

"These companies will run a project that includes the construction of ships, docks and other services related to tourism transport throughout the Amazon river," Valdivia told Andina news agency.

For his part, the president of Ucayali's Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Nelson Torres, stressed that trade is another sector which drives economic growth in the Peruvian Amazonian regions.

Thus, he pointed out that the entry of retails not just has allowed the population to have new consumption alternatives, but also it has boosted construction in the Ucayali region.

Moreover, Torres noted there are two scheduled projects which will foster tourism development in the Peruvian Amazon. The first is the railroad project which will cover the route Iquitos-Yurimaguas and the other is the hydroelectric dam of Mazan, in Loreto.
