President of the Swiss Confederation Doris Leuthard affirmed the small-scale mining formalization cooperation agreement signed with Peru will allow miners' families to get higher prices for their gold.

In a press conference, along with President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the Swiss leader said she and her delegation had held very useful talks, as well as shared growth experiences with Peru.

The official admits Peru is a very important partner in gold mining, and expects Switzerland can be useful to many families depending on this activity.

The European federal republic is willing to help them get out of illegal status and give them a better price for their gold.

The president also said strengthening friendship and bilateral cooperation through deals in different areas —valued at US$70 million— is key to Switzerland.

Deals involve infrastructure, climate, water, sanitation and good governance-related initiatives.

Ms. Leuthard admitted she was very impressed with Peru's poverty reduction, its stable macroeconomic environment, which saw a sustained growth and lower inflation.

Disasters

On the other hand, she expressed her condolences to victims of climate-related disasters that struck different parts of the Andean country. Likewise, she said Switzerland is a reliable partner that can channel support through humanitarian aid.
