Peru's participation at Seafood Expo Global 2017 resulted in more than US$85 million in sales, the country's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) reported on Thursday.

Closed deals came out of 1,200 meetings between Peru's exhibiting firms and buyers from around the globe.

"This proves the high-quality of Peruvian fishery products is increasingly recognized by international buyers, and we are sure negotiations will develop for Peruvian exhibiting firms over the next months," Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros said.

Added to this is the successful launch of the Super Foods Peru brand, which provided marketing support to the delegation.

Seafood Expo Global is the world's largest seafood trade event. Its 25th edition was held on April 25-27 in Brussels, featuring more than 1,700 exhibitors from 75 countries.

Peruvian delegation

The national delegation comprised 37 exhibiting companies. The most demanded products among importers —mainly from Spain, Italy, France and Russia— included giant squid, octopus, prawns and canned fish.

Peru's exhibiting companies are based in Tumbes, Piura, Ancash, Moquegua, Tacna and Lima regions.

"We are very grateful for the companies' strong commitment, because despite the severe climate facing our country, they attended the important event and provided optimism and trust over recovery in Peru," Ferreyros emphasized.

Europe is one of the largest destinations for Peruvian fishery exports for direct human consumption, a demanding market when it comes to quality and sustainability.
