In the near future Peruvian shopping centers will be safeguarded by RobotMan, an automation created to assist shoppers during the day and conduct daily patrols at night.

RobotMan is a small synthetic man with big bright eyes and cameras installed all over his body, whose job is to provide security at malls.

The android was designed as part of an alliance between Liderman, a Lima-based manned and electronic security and surveillance company, and Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.

In the morning, RobotMan will be able to provide useful information just by pressing a few buttons and, if doubts cannot be resolved, he will call a customer service representative to do so.

At night, he becomes a security guard. The cameras attached to his body rotate 360 degrees to monitor the surroundings and images are transmitted to a monitoring center.

If something strange occurs, he records it immediately and alerts flesh-and-blood guards.

This way watchmen are not obliged to do night rounds, since that would be RobotMan's duty.

The robot was tested for two months at a Lima San Borja district mall before designers upgraded its artificial intelligence functions.

According to Liderman's representative Martin Valdivia, the aim is to improve interaction with customers.

RobotMan was one of the many technology products presented on Thursday in an event held by the Production Ministry and the Lima Chamber of Commerce.
