'Cooperativa Agroindustrial Coopain-Cabana' agricultural association obtained the certification required to export 1,400 tonnes of organic white, red and black quinoa worth S/.15 million (about US$4.71 million), government-run Sierra Exportadora organization affirmed.

The said producers' guild is based in San Roman province's Cabana district (Peru’s Southern Puno region).

BCS Öko – GarantieKiwa certifies more than 450,000 farmers and over 1,000 processing businesses in import and export worldwide.

Its services "cover all vital agricultural cultivations and the majority of all relevant processing industries. Several market leaders are among the companies serviced by BCS," its website stated.

The Peruvian cooperative general manager, Abelardo Coila, specified this certification is granted once a year. 540 organic quinoa tonnes were certified in 2014, worth S/.9 million (about US$2.83 million). The volume reached 1,400 tonnes in 2015.

Higher value

Certifications allow quinoa to increase its international market value, essentially in Europe, where they are required.

"The organic quinoa we've certified is already exported to United States, France, Germany, Netherlands and recently China. 90% of the shipments are composed of organic white quinoa, followed by red and black [quinoa]," Coila told reporters.

Producers

He added this cooperative is in charge of producing, transforming, trading and exporting organic white, red, black and tricolor quinoa. The guild is composed of 692 producers.
