President-Elect of Peru Pedro Pablo Kuczynski asked all Peruvians to be united, after accepting the presidential credentials granted by the National Election Board (JNE) in a solemn session at the Municipal Theater in Lima.

“We have had a very tight election; the race began with 19 candidates, of whom only two were left at the end, and votes were split in half. I address my supporters and opponents; I am going to work for everyone, that is why I call for union among all Peruvians,” he claimed.

PPK —as he is popularly known in Peru— said everybody has to cooperate to reach agreements, and he even encouraged citizens to suppress some objections.

The President-Elect affirmed D-Day will be July 28, when he will officially take office as President of the Republic, and said his address to the nation will be simple: “We have to remain united.”

Many differences may exist, he noted, but it should be noted this is the fourth democratic transition since 2011, so "we have to work responsibly towards the future."

The former World Bank economist continued to note the work by the JNE in the general election and runoff, and affirmed people are convinced the process was conducted with integrity and transparency.

He claimed it will be such a challenge not to disappoint the hopes of those who believed in him.

Kuczynski reaffirmed his commitment to turn Peru into a modern, fair and equitable country.

Credentials were also granted to Martin Vizcarra and Mercedes Araoz, thereby naming them first and second Vice-Presidents Elect, respectively.
