President: Peru, Latin American country that continues reducing poverty

18:45 | Lima, Apr. 23.

Peru is one of the countries in Latin America, which continues reducing poverty, Peru’s President Ollanta Humala Tasso said.

Mr. Humala also highlighted the progress made by the government in reducing poverty rates.

In Peru, poverty was reduced from 23.9% (2013) to 22.7% in 2014, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) revealed today. Thus, over 280,000 Peruvians were taken out of poverty.

"Since 2013, Latin America has not been able to eliminate poverty, due to effects caused by the big economies slowing down and the decline in commodity prices, minerals and oil. However, Peru is among the few countries, which continues reducing poverty, particularly in rural areas," he stated.

The President recalled his administration “is working on” a multisectoral social policy, a "State Policy" aimed at solving problems of the poorest communities, those mainly located in rural and border areas.

"We are managing the macroeconomic structure and the national economy responsibly […] Peru leads the estimates in economic growth. At this time [of the year] we are not halting the projects to be developed or those currently under execution [...]," he expressed.

“At an international level, Peru is a model country in terms of responsible macroeconomic management [...] We will continue working this way because the government is focused on solving the main problems of the country,” the President told.

“[…] and fulfill the commitments to the people," Mr. Humala added.
