President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Friday addressed Peru's aspiration to become a full OECD member by the country's Independence Bicentennial (2021).
During a meeting with Swiss President Doris Leuthard at Lima's Government Palace, the Head of State highlighted his administration prioritizes said goal, which is deemed a State policy.
In this respect, he stressed the government has been implementing various reforms to meet the standards required by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Likewise, he thanked the Swiss leader, currently paying a two-day official visit to Peru, for her country's support to this end.
On the other hand, Ms. Leuthard offered her nation's experience to support Peruvian OECD-targeted reforms through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Common ground
Both presidents highlighted their countries' shared principles and values, as well as their commitment to democracy, the protection of human rights and the respect for the rule of law.
Similarly, they ratified their strong determination to further reinforcing strong bilateral ties in political, economic, trade, cultural and cooperation fields.
Mr. Kuczynski and Ms. Leuthard also underlined the relevance of articulating efforts towards implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change and meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In this sense, the Peruvian leader took the opportunity to thank his Swiss counterpart for the solidarity and humanitarian aid provided to address recent disasters triggered by "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon.
Agreements
As part of the meeting, both presidents inked agreements covering the formalization of artisanal and small-scale gold mining, as well as a financial program to support the Andean country's ongoing improvement of public finances.
An agreement related to climate change management was also signed.
On the other hand, the leaders addressed the 1998 Bilateral Treaty on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters, praising each other for their countries' positive development in legal cooperation.
Such collaboration has led to better practices to recover illegal assets frozen in the European country.
