President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski asked Pope Francis to help Peruvian people renew their faith and guide the country towards peace and dialogue.
"Peru has risen over the past 30 years, and that's why it's so important to welcome the Holy Father to this house in order to renew our faith, not for 30 years, but he can give us a push towards peace and dialogue for now," he said in his speech at the
Government Palace's Courtyard.
"We are united by hope. That is the theme of his visit. United under a vision of progress, of social revolution, and hoping that faith, dialogue, and Francis' message will help us do so. Welcome Holy Father," the Head of State said as he addressed the Catholic Church's leader.
Nevertheless, he said, "wounds of the past have healed and Peru has managed to stand up" thirty years later.
Mr. Kuczynski went on to highlight the millenary past of Peru and the wealth of its culture, in which the Catholic faith has a prominent place.
