President Humala: Political dialogue shows commitment to democracy

The national dialogue represents a "commitment to democracy," stated Peru’s President Ollanta Humala today.

Remarks were made at the beginning of the meeting for national dialogue.

He also expected this second gathering for political parties will allow to come to relevant agreements regarding the electoral reform, Mr. Humala affirmed.

The second meeting for dialogue between the government and political forces seeks to analyze the political and electoral reform.

While heading this second meeting with the representatives of all parties, the Head of State said it is “fundamental” to think about the elimination of the preferential vote, the defection and the revocation of regional and municipal authorities.

Also, he requested to consider the non-immediate reelection regional presidents and mayors. This subject was approved in the first voting process at Parliament. However, there is still one voting left.

"There is a set of affairs that can be addressed. I think from this meeting important agreements can achieved, which show the people that democracy without dialogue does not work, but democracy with dialogue can contribute with better opportunities [for Peruvians]," he indicated.

The meeting is taking place at the Lima’s Government Palace. Among the authorities attending are Prime Minister, Ana Jara, and representatives of 16 political parties.

Later, the meeting was presided over by Prime Minister, Ana Jara. President Humala had to leave the room in order to conduct his Presidential Agenda's activities.
