Peruvian President Ollanta Humala left for New York, United States to attend the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly taking place at the UN headquarters on September 27.

While in New York, the head of the Peruvian state will attend a reception hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and is also expected to meet with his French counterpart François Hollande.

These meetings will be held in preparation for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP20) that the Andean country will host from 1 to 12 December 2014 in Lima.

This global event is held annually to discuss and negotiate how the world will deal with climate change and, therefore, reverse its trend.

Considered one of the most biodiverse countries and, at the same time, one of the most vulnerable to climate change effects, Peru shares the international community concern regarding the impact of this phenomenon on communities and economies.

It should be noted Mr. Humala’s trip to participate in such an important event was approved by the Congress‘s Permanent Commission on September 19.

The motion was unanimously approved, with 12 lawmakers voting in favor, none opposed and no abstentions.
