Peruvian President Ollanta Humala expressed solidarity with Belgium after the terrorist attacks that struck its capital city, Brussels, leaving 30 people dead and tens of injured
"We have gone through terrorist acts in the past, and we express our solidarity not only with Belgium, but with France and many other European countries in this situation," the Peruvian leader told the media.
Europe experienced terrorism in the 70’s and it is breaking out again, which constitutes a challenge for intelligence and security services, Humala said after commenting on his recent visit to Brussels that led to the signing of the Schengen visa waiver agreement.
This, coupled with the massive immigration from areas like Syria and North African nations —currently affected by political instability— is clearly a very difficult situation.
He recalled there are millions of people leaving their countries as refugees seeking to enter the European Union on boats.
"The United States, NATO and the European Union have to review their policies of intervention in countries of the Middle East and North Africa region, because societies are being broken," he pointed out.
Humala reaffirmed the country’s open policy towards refugees wishing to come to Peru.
