Peruvian President Ollanta Humala today said that investing in education is the only way to become a developed nation, as it is a powerful tool for all citizens to gain access to opportunities.

During the signing of a dual-degree program agreement between of the Armed Forces Public Technological Institute of Peru and the Fanshawe College of Canada, the Head of State said this type of cooperation is part of a new vision of military service.

“This effort is for you, and when you grow up, you’ll understand that the most important thing is to bet on education, since this is the only way to become a developed country,” he affirmed.

The Peruvian leader recalled the previous military service model used to include a two-year service, after which soldiers returned to society with no training.

“We are changing that now. We currently replace their guns with a more powerful weapon that will allow them to defend their families; this is a revolution, because the State is now involved in their training,” he added.

Mr. Humala explained the State has established strategic ties, as with Canada, with which Peru enjoys closer relations not only, in traditional and mining areas, but also in defense and education.
