The Government of Peru has invested nearly S/10 billion (around US$2.9 billion) in social policy, President Humala said as he recalled the current administration has focused on improving state services for poor citizens.

Some S/5 billion (US$1.4 billion) has been directly allocated to expand the coverage of 30 social programs and the remaining S/5 billion to fund a number of projects promoted by Development and Social Inclusion Ministry (Midis).

While inaugurating refurbishment and upgrade works of Imperial-Pampas road in Huancavelica, Peru’s top official said Midis —established by his administration— is at the service of the poor population of Peru.

“Nearly S/10 billion (around US$2.9 billion) has been invested in social policy initiatives through the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion. We had to establish a new ministry that nobody would have thought of. A ministry aimed at the poor,” he stated.

One of the challenges for the next president will be to pursue social policies and expand the coverage of programs.

For instance, he explained, the new ruler must pledge to increase the number of grant holders from 100,000 to 300,000, and the construction of rural houses from 260 million to 500 million.
