President Garcia to attend Machu Picchu centennial celebrations

Pervian President Alan Garcia traveled to the southern Cusco region to participate in the 100th anniversary celebrations of the scientific discovery of Machu Picchu and lauch the Sambor Huaypo irrigation project.

Activities include several art and culture festivals as well as the staging of the traditional Tinkay ceremony and a salute from the Cuatro Suyos.

In addition a Gala Concert is scheduled to take place at the Inca sanctuary with the participation of the Andean bands Los Jaivas, Pachatusan and Arco Iris.

Also in the ancient citadel, a light and sound show featuring a performance of the Andean Orchestra and Cusco’s Symphony Orchestra and Peruvian renowned singer Tania Libertad is to be held.

The head of state will arrive to the community of Chacan to launch an irrigation project that will benefit the districts of Huarocondo, Zurite, and Anta.

President Garcia travels accompanied by Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, Agriculture Minister Jorge Villasante and Defense Minister Jaime Thorne.
