Peru’s presidential candidate Pedro Pablo Kuczynski pledged to support agriculture at regional levels by injecting S/500 million (about US$150) into State-run Agro Bank, as well as invigorating inbound tourism in mainland areas.

During the first presidential run-off debate held in Peru’s northern Piura, he underlined the relevance of Agro Bank and the need for regions to be allocated technology.

In this sense Mr. Kuczynski noted the need for new technologies to be developed.

"If we want regions to become prosperous, we must support the agriculture sector […]. Rural areas are Peru’s poorest hosting 60% of total poverty. Likewise, there are 8 million poor citizens. It turns most of them reside in rural areas,” he added.

From the National University of Piura, the candidate underlined the relevance of granting credits to the sector, as well as the need to create technological institutes across regions.

“We don’t defend genetically modified products, but we do support improved seeds, which have saved mankind from starvation […],” he pointed out.

The former Economy Minister assured he knows Peru’s mainland after being raised in Iquitos and Puno. He also reminded his first job allowed him to be based in Andean Cusco region.

On the other hand, the ex-World Bank officer proposed to develop highway and train systems and promised not to privatize the drinking water company.

The 77-year-old runner pledged to create a Center against Social Conflicts with the purpose of solving such phenomena without engaging in violent acts.

Leaving "past models behind" was considered a must with the aim of achieving excellence.
