13:03 | Lima, Feb. 27.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala today called for national unity and dialogue to lower political noise and maintain Peru’s economic growth, while noting the country will be back to lead the region according to international projections.

He said the estimated average growth rate in Latin America is at 1% and displays a downward trend, whereas Peru’s GDP is forecast to grow around 4%.

“It doesn’t mean the projection will lead to the same result. This means we have the capacity and strength to do it, but we need to work together.  In this sense, I call for the unity and dialogue," he added.

Statements were made in the Lima district of Ate, where the Peruvian leader opened four stairways and 38 retaining walls built by unskilled labor with the financing of the Labor Ministry’s Trabaja Peru (Work, Peru) program.

The construction took three months and entailed an investment of S/.10,983,800 (about US$3,550,032). A total of 1,607 people were employed to work on these projects (including 1318 women and 289 men).

Trabaja Peru’s goal is to create and promote quality jobs among the unemployed and underemployed in poverty stricken communities. This is achieved through the financing of basic infrastructure projects that require mainly unskilled labor.

During the activity, Certicheques (Training completion certificates) were granted to the beneficiaries of national youth employment  program Jovenes a la Obra (Youth to Work), promoted by the Ministry of Labour to help especially vulnerable young people and that combines training in particular jobs with labor experience.
