Production and export of pisco, the national spirit of Peru, will rise by five percent this year buoyed by the recovery seen in export markets like the United States and Europe.

Francisco Grippa, vice minister of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises, said that pisco production in Peru reached 7.2 million liters in 2013, with the US, Chile and Germany being the main destination markets.

"Last year there was an increase of 7 percent in production. If this trend continues, we expect growth of 5 percent in 2014," Grippa said during a recent ceremony to celebrate Peru's Pisco Sour Day.

The official explained that Peruvian pisco exports dropped last year due to the crisis in key markets abroad; but this year, "there is room to grow with the recovery in the US and Europe."

In addition, he noted that the Ministry of Production (Produce) and the National Pisco Commission (Conapisco) will continue working to promote quality production in the industry.

On Thursday, Produce hosted a cocktail reception to toast to the Pisco Sour Day, celebrated on the first Saturday in February. The event was chaired by Peruvian Production Minister Gladys Triveño.
