Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso traveled Wednesday to the southern Ica region to re-inaugurate the Floating Dock at Playa El Chaco on the bay of Paracas, which was improved to meet sanitary standards for artisanal fisheries. Addressing the local fishermen, the head of state said the government is committed to supporting artisanal fisheries management “so that the industrial fishing sector does not eat the small fish (artisanal fisheries)".

Humala said the new infrastructure in Paracas-worth 3.3 million soles- allows fishermen to dock their boats here, with all the facilities for the handling of the species.

He added that “betting on these artisanal docks means promoting fishing for direct human consumption. We defend the national interest involving human consumption, direct consumption of fish, especially by our children.”

To that end, he said that it was necessary to carry out similar works and, thus, reverse the paradox of having only two docks along more than 3,500 kilometers of Peruvian coast, as well as having the problem of child malnutrition, when Peru has one of the world's richest seas.

In this context, he reiterated that the government is fighting the scourge of malnutrition and is also working on promoting the mass consumption of anchovy in order to "make fish a popular choice on everyone’s menu.”
