The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague's verdict, leads into a promising future for both Peru and Chile, explained today the Chairman of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, Salvador Piñeiro.

"Today marks one year" since the verdict, which "consolidated peace" for both nations, was issued. "For the first time our border affairs were solved without the use of violence," the priest told Andina news agency.

According Piñero, the decision enables us “to live in peace, to get along very well with the neighbor nations," which is "necessary for the region."

The priest highlighted the work conducted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry during the entire process.
He referred to experts, who mastered Peruvian history.

The Peruvian team's arguments were "consistent" at court (ICJ), said the priest.
“The Diplomacy was well conducted,” Piñeiro added.

He also reminded Peruvians the anniversary must serve to "thank God" for having allowed "worthy Peruvians execute an important task for the country".

In concordance with Bishops and Chilean authorities, peace wishes for the bilateral relations have been expressed. Peace must be strengthened throughout the years, he hoped.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) awarded Peru some 50,000 square kilometers of maritime rights on January 27 last year.

The Peruvian maritime possession was extended by 50,000 (50,172) square kilometers.

In January 2008, Peru instituted proceedings against Chile at the ICJ, claiming that marine boundaries had never formally been set by the two countries.
